Bengaluru Gears Up for Monsoon: BBMP Targets Flood-Prone Areas with ₹247 Cr Boost

Bengaluru Gears Up for Monsoon BBMP Targets Flood-Prone Areas with ₹247 Cr Boost

As Bengaluru approaches the 2025 monsoon season, the city’s civic body — the Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) — has launched a comprehensive preparedness drive to tackle urban flooding, a recurring challenge in several low-lying areas.

With ₹247 crore allocated by the central government specifically for flood prevention, BBMP aims to ensure a safer and more efficient monsoon response this year.

209 Flood-Prone Zones Identified; Work Completed in Most

BBMP has identified 209 flood-prone areas across the city based on previous years’ flooding patterns. Work has been completed in 166 zones, including de-silting stormwater drains and improving road gradients to prevent waterlogging.

However, 43 vulnerable spots remain, and the civic body has issued strict orders for zone-level engineers to inspect and report progress personally. These areas will receive special attention over the next few weeks to avoid last-minute chaos.

24/7 Control Rooms and Real-Time Communication System in Place

To ensure swift action during emergencies, BBMP has set up nine permanent control rooms — one at the head office and eight zonal offices — along with 63 sub-divisional units.

These will function 24/7 throughout the monsoon, coordinating efforts among BBMP, BWSSB, BESCOM, and other civic agencies. A WhatsApp group of officials from all departments has also been formed to enable real-time updates and fast decision-making.

Monsoon Hotspots and Drainage Projects Prioritized

In addition to flood-prone zones, the BBMP has listed 82 critical monsoon hotspots on major roads, where waterlogging frequently disrupts traffic and daily life. Projects to improve stormwater drain infrastructure in these hotspots have been prioritized.

The ₹247 crore fund is also earmarked for the quick execution of tenders and equipment procurement. However, civic officials have expressed concern over delays caused by slow administrative processes and tendering bottlenecks.

Public Awareness and Resident Cooperation Encouraged – BBMP has urged citizens to remain vigilant and report any signs of water stagnation, clogged drains, or road damage during rains.

The public is encouraged to contact helplines and control rooms in case of emergencies. As the city braces for heavy rains, active participation from residents, builders, and RWAs (Resident Welfare Associations) is being seen as crucial for a smooth and safe monsoon season in Bengaluru.
